Harry Bridges Community Labor Center
Update: July, 2004

The Community Labor Center at Harry Bridges Institute was established to provide all of the tools that are required for the organization and mobilization of citizen and union activists. We have built a library, workshop and training facility with networked computer work stations, high speed internet access, printers, copy machines and audio visual media resources. When issues require instant mobilization, we want to be prepared with instant information gathering tools and the resources to disseminate necessary news directly to the people who need it, whether they are press, organizers or rank and file.

RAMPING UP WITH SEIU LOCALS 399 And 250

The Service Employees International Union Locals 399 and 250 are locked in a struggle with the Little Company of Mary Hospital in San Pedro for the right to organize over 400 Health Care workers who do not have access to the very service they provide for others.

The tedious work of organizing is made more difficult in an area like Los Angeles due to the long distances that organizers must sometimes commute, so it was a marriage made in heaven when we were able to offer the SEIU organizers a fully equipped and functional office space with everything from phones to hole punchers and paper cutters. All within one half mile of the target. It also presents mentoring opportunities that work both ways. We can learn from their efforts and leadership while they can interact with our staff and our incredible volunteers who will share knowledge and contacts that

LOCAL PARTNERS

HBI has hosted over 25 meetings of the Central San Pedro Neighborhood Council, part of a Los Angeles City initiative to bring grass roots organization into government. We are also happy to support the San Pedro Peace and Justice Coalition, hosting meetings, video screenings and workshops for these dedicated volunteers.

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY NEWS

We are fortunate to receive visitors from all over the world who want access to our growing library. Recently we welcomed John Orr, the renowned Australian journalist and filmmaker who is working on a play about Harry Bridges’ early years. We were happy to join the Maritime Union of Australia, The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and Queensland Arts Council in supporting this program.

The new Harry Bridges Community Labor Center in San Pedro, California, provides meeting space and educational opportunities to further the Institute's goals of promoting and preserving labor history. Highlights of the Center are a modern Training Room, Internet/Computer Access area, and a Memorabilia Display Center where we can showcase artifacts from the Labor Movement.
